First, I’ll start with the steel. I’ll enlarge the scope base holes and thread the bolt handle for an aftermarket bolt knob. The factory Remington action is drilled/tapped for 6-48 screws, but I want to use larger 8-40 screws for better holding power. As you’ll see throughout this slideshow and throughout my building process, I believe in “over building” or redundancy. The factory 6-48 screws are probably sufficient, kind of like hunting whitetail with a .243 Win. However, I’m not interested in adequate. I’ll take the bigger 8-40 screws, along with the .300 Win Mag and the hell with sufficient. Same with the bolt knob, the factory knob is small, replacing it with an oversized aftermarket knob makes manipulating the bolt much easier and quicker. I simply grind down the factory bolt knob to the correct diameter, put a die on it and cut the threads for my aftermarket knob.
